Electonic Discussion List

The New York Chapter of Special Libraries Association operates one Discussion List: SLA-CNY. The purpose of this list is to facilitate communication among New York Chapter members. Although the majority of the list consists of members of SLA, subscription is also open to non-members.

Members new to SLA NY will be automatically subscribed to the SLA-CNY Discussion List.Other interested parties may join SLA-CNY by sending an email to lists@lists.sla.org with the following text in the body. Leave the subject field blank.

Once you submit a request to subscribe to SLA-CNY and receive approval to join, you can manage your own subscription. Please see below for more information.

Posting a Message to the CNY-SLA Discussion List
To post a message to SLA-CNY, send an email to sla-cny@lists.sla.org. Only approved subscribers are permitted to send messages to the list.

Replying to Postings
Many postings on the list are notifications of upcoming events which require an RSVP for registration. Please read meeting announcements completely before you hit “reply.” The sender of the announcement is often not the individual handling the RSVPs; by simply replying to the invitation without reading it through, your RSVP or other message may be delayed or misplaced.

Appropriate Topics for Discussion
Members of SLA-CNY are encouraged to post messages to the list and to participate in discussions. Examples of relevant topics include:

  • Upcoming chapter-related events and meetings
  • Special offers from SLA and other information organizations
  • Workshops and online-learning events
  • Job postings
  • Reference, cataloguing and library procedure questions
  • Product queries and evaluations
  • Exchange offers of books, journals, equipment, etc.
  • Opinions and views about library-related issues

Conversely, certain types of messages should not be posted to this list. While SLA-CNY is not moderated, list members who post the following types of messages may have their list privileges revoked:

  • Commercial products or service offers
  • Résumés
  • Unlicensed copyright-protected materials
  • Messages that attack or slander other SLA members
  • Large files which consume system resources and may cause your message to be undeliverable or crash the host system
